Howell can't overcome early goal, fall 2-1
The Francis Howell Vikings found themselves in an unfamiliar position Monday night. Just 14 seconds into the game, Ladue found the back of the Vikings net on a perfectly screened shot and it was 1-0, a lead the Rams would never surrender.
The Vikings also spent a great deal of time in another unfamiliar place, the penalty box. Whistled for six penalties, the team's penalty kill responded by not allowing a goal. Despite playing almost an accumlated period short-handed, the Vikings put 22 shots on goal to match Ladue's number.
Howell battled late into the third period, cutting the lead in half with less than minute left in the game. After pulling goalie Easton Bristow, the Vikings took a face-off in the Rams end, hoping to take advantage of a rare power play opportunity. Senior Captain Riley Wright's wrist shot from the top of the slot made it 2-1. Senior Assistant Captain Caleb Bridges won the face off back to Junior Charlie Jackson who found Wright all alone for the power-play goal.
The Vikings had one last chance tie the game. Junior Michale Land's snapshot from the blue line was on goal, but Howell could not control the rebound as time expired.
Francis Howell (8-2-0) will return to action Friday night, Dec. 12 when they visit the Duchesne Pioneers (5-4-1). Game is 7:45 pm at the St. Peters Rec Plex-A Rink.
